Duffy: PILT Payments Critical In National Forest Counties

en.wikipedia.org

Communities within the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest rely on federal Payment in Lieu of Taxes monies to maintain their infrastructure. The money is paid by the feds because local taxing entities can't collect on federal tax-exempt properties. These payments are stalled in Washington, D.C.

Congressman Sean Duffy says the PILT payments are set to expire this year,  but there's a bipartisan effort to break the logjam. ...

"...we're asking the leadership, and not just Republicans but Democrats too, Nancy Pelosi and John Boehner to make sure to extend PILT funding. Not just the short term, we want to find a long term solution to this issue. From a district with a lot of federal land, this is important to you and to your communities. That's why I think it's gotten such bipartisan support. I think you will see both Republicans and Democrats fight to make sure that their counties and municipalities have access to this PILT funding..."

Duffy says it's important to maintain the payments as the federal forest is enjoyed not only by local residents but benefits people from across the nation who come to the area. Duffy says more than 100 people signed a letter he wrote to the House leadership. Duffy says this issue isn't partisan and he hopes it can be resolved soon.
