Eagle River And Towns Form Commission To Build A Bike Trail

The City of Eagle River has joined other local governments to put together a biking and walking trail to St. Germain.

The city council this week approved joining with the towns of St. Germain and Cloverland to form a commission to move forward on getting the 10-mile trail developed known as the River Trail, near the Wisconsin River.

Great Headwaters Trails spokesperson Jeff Currie says the hiking and biking group headquartered in Vilas county has agreed to be a partner with that commission. They have worked most recently to open an 11 mile stretch of hiking and biking trail between Conover and Phelps....

"...This would not only be a commission to get the trail built, which is a first step and a challenging one, but also for the sustainability for the trail. This trail would end up belonging to the communities in that commission...."

The projection finds the trail would cost about $4 million to construct. Currie says the goal is to connect Eagle River and eastern Vilas county to the extensive trail system in western Vilas and Iron counties...

"....which would connect Eagle River to the heart of Vilas trail system that goes from St. Germain all the way up through Sayner, Boulder Junction, Manitowish Waters and to Mercer. That's 55 miles of trail connected into Eagle River with a new 10 mile trail...."

Currie says they have a conceptual plan for the trail, but more study is needed by the governments involved. Currie says they're interested in getting more volunteers to help out their effort. He says go to their website at ghtrails.org to find out more information.
