Eagle River Rejects Northland Pines Annexation Terms

Facebook: Northland Pines Schools

A proposed annexation agreement between the city of Eagle River and Northland Pines School District was soundly rejected by the city council calling the document prepared by the school district more complicated than was needed.

Northland Pines has been urging the city to repair Pleasure Island road owned by the city that serves the elementary, middle, and high school which are all in the town of Lincoln. The city has wanted the school property annexed since they are on city sewer and water but the district was fearful they would be assessed for road reconstruction.

In discussions, the city agreed not to assess if annexation took place and suggested an agreement lasting 30 years. The district appeared to be favorable but the document they prepared for the city review got complicated.

One paragraph apparently would give immunity to the school district not only to fixing Pleasure Island Road but also to any future public infrastructure improvements by the city.

The city council rejected the agreement.
