"Fall Back" Time Change Sunday Signals Safety Checks

wikipedia.org

You'll have more daylight in the morning, but dark will come before supper time as the nation adjusts clocks back in most places to Standard time early Sunday morning. But emergency management workers say it's also a time to check safety devices.

Dawn Robinson of  Oneida County Emergency Management says two detectors in your house need checking...

"....the best thing to do is check the batteries in your smoke detector and carbon monoxide detectors. We want to make sure everything is working effectively any time during the year, but the fall is a great reminder.Make sure your carbon monoxide and smoke detectors are on every level of your home, including the basement. Now is the time to start preparing for winter. Make sure your furnace, electronics and appliances are working properly in your home....."

Other tips include having your furnace or woodburning stove inspected, check with a professional make sure the heater is functionally sound and vents properly outside the home. Also, never run a gasoline or propane heater or a grill (gas or charcoal) inside your home in an unventilated garage cabin, recreational vehicle, or tent. Any heating system that burns fuel produces carbon monoxide. This week, 17 people were hospitalized in Manitowoc for carbon monoxide poisoning.
