Final CWD Recommendations To Arrive In December

The DNR plans to present final revisions to the state's long-term chronic wasting disease plan to the Natural Resources Board in December.

A stakeholder committee has developed more than 60 adjustments to the existing 15-year plan. State D-N-R Big Game Section Chief Bob Nack told the Board last week 17 stakeholders were involved in the recent updating of the plan..

"....each committee member, as I mentioned there were 17 of them, were asked to prioritize each action item, What I'm showing you today are the top seven vote-getters among all the action items out there today. You can see many of these are not new. Committee members offered input on the existing recommendations in the plan also any thoughts or ideas on new recommendations...."

Their seven top priorities include informing the public on deer carcass transportation restrictions, improving public understanding of the disease and collaborating with outside researchers. Lower-priority recommendations include double-fencing for infected deer farms, local herd reduction efforts and maintaining the state's current hunting seasons.

Nack says the many stakeholder groups found common themes during the input process...

"....the comments we received are do more of this or do it better. It's comforting to know the original plan hit on many of the topics that people felt were important and we emphasized that support through this process....."

Nack says the turnaround time for testing deer taken during the hunt for CWD has dropped from 13 days in 2015 to 9 days last year. Nack told the board that his staff will spend the rest of the year deciding which recommendations should go into the new plan and present them to the board after deer hunting ends in December.
