Fix A Leak, Save Water, Money and Energy

en.wikipedia.org

City of Rhinelander residents have been asked to run their water until further notice to keep lines from freezing up. The state Public Service Commission is asking you to check your other plumbing to make sure you're not wasting water.

This is "Fix A Leak Week". The Public Service Commission of Wisconsin is partnering with the E.P.A.'s WaterSense program to draw attention to the water leaks.

Denise Schmidt...the PSC's Water Conservation Coordinator...says the amount of water wasted each year is enormous...

"...the EPA's WaterSense program estimates it's about a trillion gallons a year, nationwide. It amounts to the annual water use of more than 11 million homes...."

She says 10 percent of homes waste 90 or more gallons of water each day.

Schmidt says the fixes often are simple and cheap....

"....the leaks come from the dripping faucets, toilets and shower heads. In most cases, when you think about these replacement parts, we're not talking a major investment versus the utility bills...."

Schmidt says while the initial investment to replace a fixture can stop a person from doing the replacement, the long-term savings from lower water bills makes replacement  a good choice. Schmidt says the Department of Natural Resources has a "Fix A Leak" webpage which has videos to show you how to fix the water-wasting leaks.
