Flag To Fly Again In Downtown Rhinelander

commons.wikimedia.org

In 2012, a large American flag was raised on a new cell tower in downtown Rhinelander. The flag was part of a deal to allow AT&T the right to build the large tower. The flag has had it's problems over time, mainly getting wrapped up around the tower or ripping.

Mayor Dick Johns announced recently an agreement has been reached with the company to raise the flag again in October. Johns says the company found a special bracket which they hope would eliminate earlier problems....

".....from what I understand (AT&T) would be in here in mid-October, around the 13th...everything is ready here...we'll put the flag up with the bracket on it, make sure the wind direction is right...and let it go...."

Mayor Johns says the flag will only be raised this year through Veteran's Day. He says with snow conditions over the winter, if there's a problem, it becomes unmanageable...

".....my intent would be to get in flying in October, we fly it until Veteran's Day, take it down over the winter and put it up for Memorial Day..."

Johns says flying the flag for about a month this year would be a test run to see if the new bracket and plan works.
