Foundation Director Embarks on Wisconsin Adventure in Response to Budget Cuts

Ruth Oppedahl

The Director of the Natural Resources Foundation of Wisconsin has embarked on an 18-day kayaking trip down the Wisconsin River in response to funding cuts. Ruth Oppedahl was in Rhinelander this week, and is paddling her way past state-managed lands the foundation has supported. She says engaging in management efforts and sharing conservation stories with the public is the only way to restore hope for future conservation efforts.

“…it was sort of depressing that there were so many budget cuts because of our strong conservation legacy in Wisconsin, so I’m going to celebrate the beauty of our state and the natural resources of our state and talk about things we all can do to help in light of the budget cuts.”

Oppedahl’s initiative is called the “I Heart Wisconsin: River Trip.” The Natural Resource Foundation is tracking her trip through blog posts, photos and videos. Oppedahl’s trip will end October 14, when she reaches the mouth of the Mississippi.
