Free Tax Help Again Available In Northwoods

nationalservice.gov

Seniors and others can save money at tax time with the help of trained local tax preparers. The service is free.

Volunteers trained through the AARP Tax Aide Program will provide free federal and state income tax and Wisconsin Homestead Credit preparation and electronic filing.

Local spokesperson Bill Vancos says the volunteers are certified to do the work but there are some areas where they are not trained to help...

"....we can't do a return for someone if they have rental income. We can't do depreciation. We're not into the super-complicated kind of ones. But for the most part if somebody has W-2's, interest income, pensions, IRA's, things like that, we can handle that kind of thing...."

He says last year the Rhinelander site did about 500 returns....

"...our target audience are people who are low-to-middle income. We have an emphasis on age 60 and older. We will do younger people but the target is 60 and older. We've done some business returns, say if they're a fishing guide or if they do snow plowing. But we can't do complicated business ones...."

The service, while free, requires an appointment with times on Monday and Wednesday in the months of February and March. In Rhinelander, the service is at the Oneida Senior Center. You're asked to contact the Senior Center(715-369-6170) to make arrangements. Other sites in the Northwoods include Eagle River, Minocqua, Park Falls and Tomahawk.
