A group dedicated to chronic disease prevention in the Northwoods says grant money is available for schools, afterschool programs and summer programs to increase awareness of good food nutrition.

Northwoods LEAN(Linking Education, Activity and Nutrition) is accepting grant applications. Spokesperson Maria Skubal says the grants are awarded within Oneida and Vilas counties. She says Garden Based Nutrition is designed to give students more access to fresh fruits and vegetables...

?

"....it's something where they do taste testing in their classrooms. They could actually go outside and start a garden completely from scratch, they could be growing plants. They could already have a garden at their school and maybe add on to it...."

Skubal describes who is eligible...

?

"....any afterschool program, whether that be at a YMCA or the Children's Museum in Eagle River, summer programs or youth groups that have students that are interested in doing this program, they would be eligible...."

Surveys find a wide majority of Americans don't incorporate enough fruits and vegetables into their diets.

Applicants can determine the size of their projects. A small scale project that is $500 or less to complete. A large scale project is more than $500 but less than $1,500 to complete.

The grant will be open during the month of March. More information is available at the website northwoodslean.org or by contacting Skubal at the Oneida County Health Department.
