Hazelhurst Gets $800,000 For Town Hall/Fire Barn

The town of Hazelhurst is getting money from a state loan fund to build a new town hall and fire barn, but town electors will have the final say if construction is to be approved.

?

The Board of Commissioners of Public Lands announced a grant of $800,000 to the Oneida county town. The money is loaned at low rates to governments.

Town of Hazelhurst chair Ted Cushing says the project has been in the works for almost two years. He says the current town hall was found by a consulting firm to be needing repair. They thought about a new building, but now the town is negotiating to buy the former Ryden's Hazelhurst Marine building...

"....and some property came available in Hazelhurst and it was be determined it could become the community center and town hall and it could become the new fire barn....."

Cushing says they have a number of contingencies to work through, including getting the approval of the town electors.

The meeting to discuss the approval will be set in late April. Cushing says if the electors don't want the project, it will be done.

The interest from the money then is used by the Board of Commissioners of Public Lands to fund financial aid to public elementary, middle and high school libraries. That totaled $30.2 million in 2014 alone.
