Low-income residents in the Northwoods can begin applying for heating assistance funds.

Wisconsin Public Service spokesperson Leah VanZile says the enrollment period for those eligible is open...

".....October is the month where energy assistance start to be available. Customers can apply at typically Social Services departments or NEWCAP depending on your county. These funds are available until they run out...."

The Wisconsin Home Energy Assistance Program administers the federally-funded Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program. The program provides assistance for heating and electrical costs and energy crisis situations. The program helps pay a portion of home energy bills.

The program helps 225,000 Wisconsin households each year. More information is also available at your county Social Services department.

VanZile says customers should plan for the heating season and contact WPS to make arrangements for paying heating bills.
