Thursday's Northland Pines boys hockey game will provide a platform to raise awareness about mental illness and suicide prevention.
The team, along with the Mental Health Interagency Coalition, a collaboration of community partners in Forest, Oneida And Vilas counties, will provide information at Northland Pines. Ministry Medical Group's Heidi Karns is a licensed clinical social worker...
".....the suicide rate is the tenth leading cause of death in the United States. In adolescents ages 15-24, suicide is the second leading cause of death...."
She says they will be providing information on suicide prevention and mental illness....
"....Charlie DePuydt, who is the hockey coach, has been working with his players and during the day, along with wearing their jerseys, they will be wearing an EMIS pin, or Eliminate Mental Illness. They will be wearing this throughout the day and giving information to some students who ask...."
Karns says they're partnering with the National Alliance On Mental Illness, Northern Lakes to provide a table of information. They will also be raising money for the NAMI chapter's goal of building a walk-in center. Everyone is invited to the hockey match to find out more, says Karns.
The event is in partnership with Northland Pines High School, Eagle River Ministry Medical Group, Vilas County Public Health, the Aging and Disability Resource Center of the Northwood and NAMI Northern Lakes
