A well-known Eagle River area business was severely damaged by fire early Monday.

Eagle River Fire Chief Pat Weber reports they were called at 3:30 a.m. to Horant's Garden Center on West Pine Street. Weber says there were reports of a small explosion then  a fire. He says when the department arrived, the building was fully engulfed.

Weber reports the owners, Leo and Mary Horant, got out of the building safely. Weber reports there were no injuries and everyone was accounted for.  He says an apartment building next to the floral center did not sustain damage. He said it appears the building with the fire appears to be a total loss.

He says St. Germain and Conover Fire Departments also assisted in putting out the blaze. About  8  a.m. Highway 70 traffic was reopened.
