Internet Safety Expert to Speak At Rhinelander Schools

The School District of Rhinelander is bringing in an expert from the state Department of Justice to talk with students and parents about internet crimes and safety.

The district has been dealing with a recent investigation of students sharing explicit photos via social media and on cell phones.

As a result of the school’s investigation about ten students were briefly suspended, but Superintendent Kelli Jacobi says it became clear that the problem was broader and more systemic than just a few students.

“And so we decided that we really needed to start focusing on getting the right information into the hands of students and their parents in the community.”

Eric Szatkowski is a special agent with the state Department of Justice, in the Division of Criminal Investigation and on the state’s Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force.  He’ll be talking to students at Central Intermediate School, James Williams Middle School, and Rhinelander High School…about the risks of sharing digital information, and the dangers of online predators.

Jacobi says each presentation will be tailored for a different age group.

“The presentations that will be given are really geared toward the appropriate level. So the fourth and fifth graders presentation will not be nearly as in-depth as the high school presentation.”

There will also be an evening presentation for adults only, titled “The Dark Side of Digital Technology.”

Szatkowski is speaking Tuesday, November 11th.
