Law Enforcement Officials Honor Antigo Officer Who Killed Prom Shooter

An Antigo police officer was recognized by Nicolet Area Technical College Tuesday for his response to an active shooter at Antigo High School in late April.

Officer Andrew Hopfensperger Jr. was awarded a plaque and letter of recognition by Nicolet’s Criminal Justice Advisory Committee for shooting and killing 18-year old Jakob Wagner of Antigo April 23. Wagner opened fire in the parking lot of Antigo High School and injured two students as they were leaving the prom. Officer Hopfensperger was on patrol when he heard the shots and responded to the scene. Officer Hopfensperger shot Wagner three times. Wagner was brought to Wausau hospital where he later died.

Officer Hopfensperger thanks area communities for their support…

“…it’s…it’s been a lot. I’ve been getting support from family and friends, the community here, other communities, where I used to work, the ‘thank you’s’, the ‘good jobs’, the pats on the back. It’s all positive and it’s all good.”

Officer Hopfensperger has been with the Antigo Police Department since 2013.
