Look for El Nino Surprises During the Great Backyard Bird Count

El Nino has been the center of attention this winter making for surprisingly warm temperatures. But participants in the 2016 Great Backyard Bird Count may also be in for a few surprises. The Great Backyard Bird Count is a worldwide count tracking changes in bird distribution. Local bird enthusiast Bob Dall says some of those changes may be traced back to El Nino and other unusual weather patterns.

“...you can count birds on your feeder or on a walk out in the woods it’s an opportunity to contribute to citizen science by reporting the birds you see out in nature. If you have problems identifying the birds there’s some help online for that too.”

Dall says there’s no limit to how many times you report bird sightings. Online reports are updated every half hour and everyone is welcome to participate.

The bird count is February 12 through the 15. People can learn more and report bird sightings at birdcount.org
