Justin Szews has a new title and a new contract as full time principal at Lakeland Union High School in Minocqua.

The current assistant principal will succeed Jim Bouché, who is stepping down from his duties as principal after three years of serving in a combined principal and administrator post. Bouché will become a part-time administrator as of July 1.

The school board Monday approved a two-year contract with Szews signing it Thursday 3/29) to make it official. The contract goes from July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2020. Szews will draw an annual salary of $116,000 and will receive a benefit package, including the district paying 90 percent of his group health insurance premium.

The board did not advertise the position, apparently already settling on Szews as the next principal if he accepted. Szews is licensed by the state of Wisconsin as a principal. Szews came to LUHS in 2008 as its dean of students and activities director. He acquired the assistant principal duties the second year, with the past four years serving solely as assistant principal.

The Association of Wisconsin School Administrators named Szews Assistant Principal of the Year in 2017. This July Szews will represent Wisconsin at the National Principals’ Convention in Chicago, where the 50 national Assistant Principals of the Year will be honored.
