Meeting set for U.S. 51 Reconstruction in Hazelhurst, Cassian

The DOT has set a public hearing date for later this month to take comment on the proposed reconstruction of U.S. 51 in Hazelhurst and Cassian.

Minocqua's portion of the road work is being done this year. Hazelhurst to the south of Minocqua and Woodruff to the north have both challenged the DOT concerning plans in those towns, as has Arbor Vitae in Vilas county.

DOT Project Leader Forrest Van Asten says the meeting will give the state input...?

"....the meeting provides the public with an opportunity to provide written or verbal testimony whether it be support or against the project or just to provide an opportunity to make comments on the project...."

The plan is to re-do Highway 51 between Rocky Run Road and county "Y", along with work at intersections, culvert upgrades, upgrading lanes and many other changes...?

"....we want to provide the(public) with a preliminary plan set and look at maps and pictures and things like that...what we're proposing to do at this location with this project and provide a presentation where we can over some of the specifics..."

The meeting is set for August 27 from 4 to 7 p.m. at the Northwoods Community Elementary School on Highway "K" in Harshaw. The plan is available for viewing at the DOT office in Rhinelander, the Cassian and Hazelhurst town halls, and at the Minocqua Public Library.

The work is planned to begin in 2016 and Van Asten says it's likely to take two construction seasons.
