Meeting On U.S. 51 Construction To Be Held March 1

Wisconsin DOT

Work is beginning soon on a stretch of U.S. Highway 51 between Rocky Run Road and Oneida County "Y" in Cassian and Hazelhurst.

A meeting has been set by the D.O.T. to give citizens a chance to see how the construction will impact them. DOT spokesperson Kristin McHugh says the construction will be a two year project and could begin as early as mid-March...

".....that means we are going to have lane restrictions and we want people to understand that and plan for that as they're traveling through. Traffic does get heavier as we move through the summer months and into the tourism season. We're also going to be constructing a bridge over Rocky Run Creek..."

McHugh says there will always be at least one lane open during construction...

"....it will take place over the course of two construction seasons. The most important thing to keep in mind is that we are going to keep the road open. The tourists and the people who travel into the Northwoods will be able to get there. It might be a little slower at times when traffic gets heavier, though..."

Motorists can expect single lane closures, flagging operations, and temporary traffic lights.

The entire project will be completed in November of 2017.

The public information meeting is at the Cassian town hall on Church Road in Harshaw on Tuesday, March 1 at 5:30 p.m. If you go to the state transportation website 511wi.govyou can find out more information.
