Menominee Positive About Gaming Compact Amendment

The Menominee tribe doesn’t think an amendment to the state’s gaming compact will stand up to legal scrutiny.

The tribe’s Kenosha Gaming Authority Chair Gary Besaw says the latest agreement with the Potawatomi might not meet federal requirements of the Indian gaming regulatory act.

But he thinks that could ultimately be a good thing for the proposed Kenosha casino.

“We thank the Walker administration and the team for walking through these landmines and clearing that out. Once that’s denied, the governor is free from anything, any tailings connected with the 2005 Doyle gaming compact amendment. So he can do basically what’s best for Wisconsin.”

This month Governor Scott Walker amended an agreement with the Potawatomi tribe…saying the state would guarantee payments if the tribe’s casino lost money as a result of the Kenosha facility.

The Menominee tribe has agreed to make those payments, but the state is now saying it will pay if the tribe doesn’t.

Governor Scott Walker has said he wants all 11 tribes to support a proposed Kenosha casino before the state approves it.
