MI Allows Heavier Log Loads from WI

It’s now a little easier for Wisconsin log haulers to cross the Michigan border.

Michigan transportation officials will now issue permits to allow 98,000 pound loads on six axles…where they previously only allowed gross weights of 90,000 pounds on five axles.

DOT Permitting Chief Kathleen Nichols says it expands the season for log hauling.

“It will foster more rigs on the Wisconsin side to go to 98 on 6. And the benefit that comes from that is that then they can haul logs all year round in Wisconsin all year round on those rigs. They can bring em from Michigan and they can go into Michigan. That’s a big deal.”

The law applies year round, including during spring thaw.

Currently northern Wisconsin roads are classified as frozen, which means haulers can carry heavier loads of certain forest products.
