Mole Lake Holds Powwow to Get Out the Native Vote

The Sokaogon Chippewa Community is trying out a new way to boost voter turnout for Tuesday’s election.

The tribe is holding a Native Vote Powwow Wednesday evening in Mole Lake.

Tribal Chairman Chris McGeshick says he hopes the cultural event will remind people of the importance of the Native American vote, both locally and on a statewide or national level.

“The intent of this powwow is to get the community out, to come together, to let them know that voting is important. It’s an event to get the word out, to increase the percentage of native voters in communities.”

McGeshick says voter turnout is typically less than fifty percent, but he hopes it will continue to grow.

The powwow will include musical performances and a feast, and people will be able to register to vote at the event.  It’s 6 to 10 pm at the Mole Lake Bingo Hall.

Mole Lake has its tribal elections November 4th, along with state and national ones.
