Moose Appears in Rhinelander

Denali National Park and Preserve

Drivers may need to look out for more than just deer.

A moose has been spotted in Rhinelander.  City Police officer Chad Brown says it was spotted by a resident about a week ago.  Responding to the call Brown tailed the moose in his squad car. He filmed the moose for several minutes.  Brown says a moose can do a lot of damage if it collides with a car.

“Any animal within the city can be a concern, I mean –deer, coyote, wolf, raccoon, anybody can hit em. Moose just tend to cause more damage to vehicles when they are struck. So it’s good for people to be aware that there are moose around, and it’s good for people to be on the lookout for them.”

Officer Brown says it did not appear to be a full-grown moose, but still might weigh 900 pounds.  He says moose are typically spotted every year, but it was the first time he had seen one on patrol.  Brown notes that people should be on alert even outside Oneida County.

“We don’t know exactly where it is. Moose cover a lot of area in one day so we don’t know exactly where its home base is. But I’m sure it will be seen around Rhinelander in the near future.”

Brown turned on his video camera since it was such an unusual sight.  He posted the video on the Rhinelander Police Department’s Facebook page…and it has received quite a few hits.
