More Bicyclists, More Sharing On Wisconsin's Roadways

More bicycles are on the road this summer and a Wisconsin Bike Federation spokesperson says motorists and bicyclists need to know the rules of the road.

Richard Hablewitz says according to Wisconsin law, a bicycle is a vehicle and has the same rights afforded to any other vehicle using the roadway....

"....cars have to by law give bicyclists at least three feet by law. A bicyclist can use the full travel lane if they wish to. The law does say the bicycle has to ride as far right in the lane as practical...."

Hablewitz says 'what's practical' can vary depending on road conditions. Often times there might be debris on the right side of the road, so the bicyclist can legally move away from the debris, but then must move as far right as possible.

Hablewitz provides safety talks to groups, including meetings in the Eagle River, Tomahawk and Boulder Junction areas soon. He says he will stop by if you make a request...

"....they can do a formal request for an ambassador at the website, www.wisconsinbikefed.org..."

Hablewitz is one of 12 safety ambassadors for the Wisconsin Bike Federation and he says he's available to stop by for a group safety presentation in the Northwoods.
