About half of Lakeland Union High School’s Class of 2016 tested proficient or advanced in English language arts based on their ACT college admissions exam scores, the school board learned recently. But results of the test taken also show many are struggling with mathematics compared to other students statewide.
For the first time ever, all public school juniors across Wisconsin took the ACT test last March, said Director of Curriculum Rob Way.
"The test results help us guide our improvement efforts in the district. We can identify where we need to focus and to improve. We can celebrate the growth and achievement of our students.", he said.
The ACT measures what students know in the core academic areas of English, reading, writing, math, and science. Students’ individual skills are then listed as either advanced, proficient, basic, or below basic. As needed, ninth and tenth graders are assigned to double English language arts and mathematics classes to accelerate their learning, Way said.
Lakeland had an average composite ACT score of 20, tying Wisconsin’s statewide average.
