National Library Week Focuses Library's Role In Community

en.wikipedia.org

Since 1958, the American Library Association has sponsored National Library Week in mid-April.This week is set aside to celebrate the contributions of libraries and librarians. At the E.U. Demmer Library in Three Lakes a full week of activities are planned. Library Director Erica Brewster says the role of the library is changing....

"....we're not just places for studying and checking out books. It's really about being of service to the community as a central focus. Our goal is to level the playing field for all ages and our easy access to technology. We're really here to make our lives work...."

She says the library is the center of the community and the resources the communities need to survive. The Demmer Library will have an appetizer contest tonight(4/11) and Wednesday a cupcake making and decorating contest, two events Brewster says will enable people to show off culinary skills. Thursday afternoon they're hosting Dr. Mark Weissman from Wausau, a brain surgeon who wrote a book after suffering a stroke. On Friday afternoon there will be a young adult beading class. Students in grades 6 through high school are invited.

More information is on the Demmer Library website. The 2016 National Library Week theme is "Libraries Transform" More information is available there atilovelibraries.org
