Natural Resources Board Passes Willow Master Plan Revision

The state Natural Resources Board this week amended and approved a revised master plan for the Willow Flowage Scenic Waters Area in Oneida County.

DNR officials say the revised plan increases public access on lightly developed existing roads and provides additional camping opportunities on the flowage and Tomahawk River.

Willow Flowage Property Manager Tom Shockley says after three years of feedback and work the plan is balanced between several different groups..

".....it will result in the increase in motorized access. There also will be more opportunities for folks who enjoy silent sports. We're going to have more hunter walking trails that are non-motorized, more bicycle trails, more equestrian opportunities as well..."

He says the revision will also increase access for ATV and UTV's on the Willow. He says those trails were added where there were acceptable existing trails. Shockley says the plan includes two group campsites along the flowage shoreline and also four campsites along the lower Tomahawk River corridor between the Willow and Lake Nokomis.

The board amended the draft master plan to include about 280 acres of adjacent DNR owned land within the Willow Flowage project boundary along the Tomahawk River, said to be a highly desirable place for hunters, hikers and also has a snowmobile trail.

The Willow property includes approximately 22,000 acres of upland and 5,000 acres of submerged land.
