New College Students at Risk for Identity Theft

www.thebluediamondgallery.com

As summer comes to end, first-time college students are preparing by purchasing tvs, computers, and new bedding for their dorm rooms. For most, the idea of identity theft is far from their minds.

Administrator of the Division of Trade and Consumer Protection for the state, Frank Frassetto says college students are at risk for ID theft and generally aren’t prepared to have to protect themselves.

“College students may not understand the consequences of ID, they may not be aware of the behavioral risks that thieves are looking for, and generally they may be unprepared to protect themselves when a steady stream of these credit card offers and requests for personally information begins.”

Frassetto says college students should consider purchasing a lock box and a paper shredder to protect their personal information.

He reminds students to shred credit card offers or bills before throwing them out and to keep sensitive information out of sight.

More information is available on the Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection's website.
