New Rhinelander Recreation Plan In Works

commons.wikimedia.org

Rhinelander is without a comprehensive recreation plan, but a five-year plan is in the works with a draft likely this fall.

The city has contracted with North Central Wisconsin Regional Planning to put together a plan.
Planner Fred Heider says Rhinelander has a number of recreational elements already in place, including several parks, walking paths, BMX track and a 2003 Pathways Project, which spelled out hiking and biking trails in the city.

Heider says an earlier survey of Rhinelander residents found this breakdown of preferred recreational activities...

".....almost 80 percent of the people like walking or hiking. Boating or kayaking is 54 percent. Half the people drive for pleasure, half the people fish. Gardening, swimming, bicycling is 40 percent. Hunting is 25 percent, archery and rifle shooting is 22 percent..."

There's also a plan to run a bike path along the Wisconsin and Pelican Rivers and extend a path to Nicolet College. Heider says he's been in contact with a number of Rhinelander area persons interested in various forms of recreation.

Heider says he thinks the updated draft plan will be ready for the council this fall. He says if anyone wants to add more input to contact their city council member, the mayor, or attend the Parks, Buildings and Grounds committee meetings.
