The Never Forgotten Honor Flight based in Wausau makes its next trip with Northwoods and central Wisconsin veterans to Washington, D.C. on Monday, September 11.
Flight co-found Jim Campbell says this will be the 29th flight over the span of 8 years.
To date, 2,563 veterans have gone to the nation's capitol to see the memorials to their particular conflicts.
"....the first flight in the fall is special because we have representatives from all generations. World War II, Korea and Vietnam. This particular flight the majority are Korea veterans. we still have a handful of World War II and about three dozen Vietnam veterans as well..."
The flights include veterans from 12 counties including Oneida, Vilas, Iron, Price Lincoln and Langlade counties. Campbell says the World War II veterans are special...
"...only 16.1 million served during World War II. That population is now down to 3.5 percent. There's not a lot of them left. The average age is 92...."
He says they have 9 World War II veterans, 45 veterans of Korea, and 32 Vietnam veterans on this flight.
Campbell says veterans and caretakers will be well taken care of. He says a common misconception among veterans is that they had to have seen combat. Campbell says that isn't so, as they will fly anyone from the era.
