Nicolet Ramps Up Welding Program

Ryan Neuls

Nicolet Area Technical College is working with Oldenburg Group, which has a facility west of  Rhinelander, to get more welders in the workforce.

Oldenburg makes equipment for military operations and mining.

Dean of Trades and Industry at Nicolet, Brigitte Parsons says the increased emphasis on programs like welding shows a growing need in the marketplace.

"Nicolet College has been working very hard to learn more about what our employers need locally. We're very excited about what Oldenburg has done but also what many other employers have done in the region with getting new work, new jobs for northern Wisconsin."

Parsons says Nicolet recently expanded its Welding program to take additional students. The college also has hired top welders working at Oldenburg to teach additional classes part-time.

Oldenburg recently was awarded a $40 million contract from the U.S. Navy to build a variety of components for ships.

Parsons says welders are getting paid above average. She says classes start on August 26.
