Nicolet Resource Advisory Committee Seeks Project Proposals

Local counties interested in improving the Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest lands and resources are encouraged to submit project proposals to the Forest Service.

The Nicolet Resource Advisory Committee works with Forest, Florence and Oconto Counties, and receives funds from the Secure Rural Schools and Community Self-Determination Act each year based on the percentage of land in federal ownership, timber sales and per capita income.

This year the committee has $135,000 available for projects. Public Affairs Officer Hilary Markin says project proposals can be requests to enhance recreation sites, decommission roads or maintain roads and trails. She says project proposals of any dollar amount are encouraged.

“…a lot of times a county will be interested in invasive species removal on either a property that’s adjacent to us or on a roadway so they can put a request in for that funding. We’ve done boundary markings, we’ve done watershed projects which have been pretty cool putting in a stream crossing or something like that, so there’s been some pretty cool projects out there.”

Markin says members of the public, nonprofit organizations and local governments can submit proposals. The funds for approved projects are available for 2016 work.

All project proposals are due by Friday, August 12 and are to be emailed to Penny McLaughlin. McLaughlin’s contact information is available on our WXPR website.
