No Charges Filed in VC Sheriff's Investigation Into Landfill Venture Group

A meeting next week in closed session in Eagle River will discuss  a years-long investigation by the Vilas County Sheriff's Department into some operations of the Highway "G" landfill near Eagle River.

As part of an open records request with the Vilas County Sheriff's Department made by WXPR, it revealed a landfill employee alerted the Sheriff's department that people were allegedly taking the scrap metal from the landfill, and selling it for profit.  In December, the Sheriff's Department sent their report to District Attorney Albert  Moustakis. In January, Moustakis recommended no charges be filed. Moustakis said in the paperwork that the Sheriff's Department should contact the group to improve oversight.

Moustakis declined comment on the investigation.

In checking with the state Department of Justice, they also declined to comment.

Last week, the Landfill Venture Group met with several town board members at the Arbor Vitae town hall. The Lakeland Times reports some  town officials were upset that little about the sheriff's department investigation was shared with them.

Next Monday, March 2, the Landfill Venture Group will meet in closed session at Eagle River City Hall. On the agenda is "review Vilas County Sheriff Department report of criminal investigation of activities at the landfill."

The next item on the agenda is to return to open session to act on the matter discussed in closed session should any action be necessary.
