Authorities won’t be filing criminal charges against Rhinelander students who shared explicit photos on cell phones.
The joint investigation by the Oneida County Sheriff’s Office and the school district has concluded most of the sharing happened outside of school hours and property.
Several students who did share photos while at school were given a one-day suspension, while those participating in athletics also served game suspensions as required by the athletics code.
Explicit photo sharing could be considered a felony offense, but the Sheriff’s Office and the School District are taking an educational approach to a problem they say is widespread.
A presentation from state justice department agent Eric Szatkowski was canceled last week due to a snowstorm, but has been rescheduled for December 3rd.
Szatkowski will give age-appropriate presentations to high school and middle school students about the risks of sharing information online and through social media, as well as an evening presentation for parents and community members.
