North Deer Harvest Numbers Higher Than Recent Years

Higher numbers of deer were taken in the Northwoods during the recently-concluded nine-day gun deer hunt. DNR ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says the numberof deer taken in the region increased...

"....it was nice to see a 30 percent increase in the buck harvest in northern Wisconsin. That following a couple of years of very mild winters and very low antlerless permits. We're glad to see things have turned around a bit in that part of the state..."

Preliminary registration figures show that almost 197,000 deer were harvested during the nine-day gun deer hunt, compared to 198,000 last year. Wallenfang says the muzzle loader season is underway along with antlerless hunts in various parts of the state to continue the deer hunt.

Wallenfang says given that nearly 600,000 hunters were in the woods, the hunt was relatively safe...

".....only five shooting accidents over the season and luckily no fatalities so congratulations to all the hunters and all those hunter education folks that teach classes every year and run thousands of people through those programs to make sure folks are handling firearms in a responsible manner...."

In the 17 county Northern Forest Zone, 23,000 antlered and almost 9.000 antlerless deer were taken. That area runs roughly north of state Highway 64.
