Northland Pines To Vote On School Start Date Waiver

Northland Pines School District

The Northland Pines school board appears ready to develop a request for a waiver from the state Dept. of Public Instruction (DPI) to start school earlier than September 1 next year after surveying parents and businesses for input.

District administrator Mike Richie told the school board Monday night the state law mandating waiting until September 1 to start is old and outdated and that local school boards should be able to determine when school should start.

Richie has prepared two calendars for the board; one would start next year on Sept 5 with the last day of school the following June 6 or 7, the other would start on August 21 and the last day would be the Friday prior to Memorial Day. He pointed out WIAA sports starts in August and voucher and charter schools are not bound by the September date and while DPI has said they are not the calendar police, they would be obligated to investigate an earlier start should a complaint be received.

The Pines board approved the survey and requested a third calendar be prepared starting school August 28.
