The state Natural Resources Board this week didn't take long accepting a $1.1 million donation to construct a bike trail in Vilas county.

DNR Deputy Secretary Kurt Thiede outlined the donation to the board...

"....Manitowish Waters Bike Trail, Inc. will donate construction of a public bike trail, which is valued at $1.15 million in the Town of Manitowish Waters at the Northern Highland-American Legion State Forest in Vilas county. This will extend the public bike trail system known as the Heart of Vilas Trails. I'm recommending the (Natural Resources Board)accept this generous donation of construction and time and materials...valued at $1.15 million...."

Currently, the Heart of Vilas Bike Trail system  includes more than 40 miles of paved trails that connect St. Germain, Sayner, Boulder Junction and Manitowish Waters and travels through the state's largest forest, the Northern Highland-American Legion. The donation will connect a new bike trail segment recently constructed by the Town of Mercer in Iron county to the north. The bike trail will connect to amenities at the Manitowish Waters Chamber of Commerce building. The donation includes about 4 miles of new paved bike trail development.

Manitowish Waters Bike Trail, Inc. will fund through the donation, the construction of all elements of the project, said to be $1.1 million. Manitowish Waters Bike Trail will be responsible for the cost of future maintenance and operation and it will be open to the general public.
