221 local fire departments...many in the Northwoods...are receiving grant money to help the DNR fire wildfires.

DNR officials say the on-going program opens up for grant applications on July 1. They money comes from state and federal funds to enable the local departments to get equipment needed to help fight wildfires.

The DNR's Jennifer Feyerherm says often the local departments are closer to the fire outbreak than DNR crews...

".....in various areas of the state, responsibilities to fight fires is shared between the DNR and local fire departments. Local fire departments are often much closer to the scene....."

In the Northwoods, the towns of Arbor Vitae, Conover, Lac du Flambeau, Manitowish Waters, Plum Lake and the city of Eagle River in Vilas county all were awarded grants. In Oneida county, Pelican Fire and the town of Cassian are recipients, the town of Corning in Lincoln county and the city of Merrill; Pickerel Fire Department in Langlade county, the town of Kennan in Price county and the town of Kimball in Iron county.
