A policy to introduce random drug testing for Northland Pines school district high school students will be finalized for presentation and possible introduction by the school board in July.
District Administrator Mike Richie said he was waiting to have a meeting with officials to determine what substances should be tested for and what the cost will be. The draft policy has shifted from testing students who participate in school activities and those that drive to school to randomly testing students whose parents have provided written permission. Since it will be random, those tested would return to the general pool and could be tested again. All test results will be confidential and parents will be notified of both positive and negative tests. The number and frequency of testing has yet to be determined. In addition, the student handbook will have language added that any law enforcement officer may apply a breathalyzer if there is suspicion at school or and school activity if a student in under the influence of alcohol.
Also, the repair of Pleasure Island road continues to be discussed with a report by board member Phillip Epping who walked the road with Eagle River City Administrator Joe Laux. While a cost estimate is being prepared, the school board expressed a desire to meet with the Vilas County highway committee and rejected taking over ownership of the road.
