Officials Warn Against Aquatic Invasive Species

en.wikipedia.org

The Oneida County Land and Water Conservation is urging the public to pay special attention for invasive species as they pull out their piers, boats and boat lifts for the winter. Invasive Species Coordinator Michele Sadauskas says zebra mussels are especially likely to attach to items such as wood, rocks and boats. She says once zebra mussels are found, they’re impossible to remove.

“…What becomes  critical is just to keep them in that water body; to put inspectors or talking more with boaters, making people aware of the possibility or the fact that they’re in there and trying to keep containment is what we’re trying to do at that point.”

Sadauskas says zebra mussels are detrimental to native plants, and encourages the public to report any suspicions of invasive species.
