Oneida Co. Buys Town Of Lynne Parcel For County Forest

en.wikipedia.org

The Oneida County Board last week approved a $63,000 land purchase that will block in a mile-long stretch of land in the Oneida county forest in the town of Lynne.

Forest Director John Bilogan says a private landowner wished to sell the property and the parcel nicely fit into surrounding county forest. The parcel is bi-sected by West Road. Bilogan estimated the county could set up a timber sale after the purchase which would recoup some of the cost...

"there is a fairly decent stand of hardwood on the parcel and our department estimates that if we were to acquire the parcel we could have a timber sale and generate $15,000....:"

Bilogan says another way to recoup some of the cost was to apply for a Knowles-Nelson Stewardship Grant that would also bring in about half of the appraised value. Bilogan says often when a private parcel is surrounded by county forest they run into problems with the private landowner encroaching onto the public land.

The board agreed with Bilogan, agreeing to the purchase price and directing Bilogan to try to recoup as much of the cost as possible.
