Online Tool Helps Northwoods Hunters, Birders

Wikimedia Commons

The DNR is offering an online tool to help people find where deer baiting and feeding activities are banned due to the discovery of Chronic Wasting Disease.

DNR wildlife section chief Tami Ryan says there are 43 counties affected by CWD. Those are the same counties where baiting and feeding of deer is prohibited. She says the agency has an online tool to help hunters and the public know where the affected areas are located....

"....by going to our department's website at DNR.wi.gov, keyword "CWD", the homepage has a map of the CWD affected counties. and all those are shaded in gray. It's a pretty good tool"

She says people may still feed birds and small mammals...

"....make sure those bird feeders are elevated high enough off the ground so deer cannot access them. If you notice the deer still getting in it, then you should take that feeder down...."

Ryan says people may still feed birds and small mammals, provided the feeding devices are within 50 yards of a human dwelling and tall enough to prevent deer from feeding there.

Ryan says stores are selling food for deer, but she says it can't be used in counties where there is a baiting and feeding ban.
