Panfish, Trout Rule Changes Pass Natural Resources Bd.

Wisconsin DNR

Some Northwoods lakes are among those seeing reduced panfish bag limits to try to allow for more larger fish to survive. About 100 lakes will have the experimental bag limits.

The Natural Resources Board approved the changes recommended by the DNR and the Conservation Congress after a series of public input sessions.

Some lakes, like the popular Kentuck Lake in Vilas county will have a total of 25 fish, but no more than 10 on one species. Boom Lake in Rhinelander will have a total of 15 panfish but no  more than 5 of any one species during May  and June, 25 panfish in total the rest of the   year.  Big Sand Lake in Vilas county will have restrictions on sunfish bags.

The DNR's Kate Strom Hiorns said area lakes were removed from the list after public input...

"....we decided to remove Upper and Lower Post lakes from this proposal and remove Lake Clara in Lincoln county, in that case there was no public access on that lake. Also the Phillips chain and Solberg lake in Price county....."

Also simplified were trout stream regulations. All the changes are set to begin in the 2016-17 season. The listing of lakes is on the DNR website underpanfish fact sheet.
