Phelps Tries One More Time For ATV trails

commons.wikimedia.org

The Phelps town board has asked Vilas county for one more chance to open town and county roads to ATV's.

The board recently approved an ordinance allowing ATV traffic for a two-year trial period. The ordinance would need the approval of the Vilas county board.

Phelps town chair Colin Snook says the ordinance is largely the same proposal that the county board rejected two years ago.

"...basically what we're looking to do is make some connections as proposed to get us out on(county)_"A" and hookup with other trails in connecting counties....."

Two years ago the matter was debated by the Vilas county board before being rejected. Snook hopes the matter is sent to the voters to decide...

".....my personal thoughts are I hope the county would send this to a referendum and find out what the people really think...."

Snook thinks the addition of ATV's could be a serious economic driver for Phelps. Last time, the county board rejected the use of county "A" which effectively ended the proposal. Voters in 2004 rejected using county resources for ATV trails. Snook thinks times have changed...

"....I think maybe that sentiment has change, maybe it hasn't, but I strongly think that ought to be polled again and the people asked what they really want...."

The matter will go to a Vilas county board committee for first discussion.
