Premier Tax in JFC Budget, Parkinson Named Interim Administrator

WXPR

The Joint Finance Committee late Thursday approved  the idea of Rhinelander getting a Premier Resort Area Tax into the state budget, but another local vote will be necessary. The committee is working to  put together an operating budget for the state. After an advisory vote last month was passed by Rhinelander voters, the matter was put into budget consideration by Northwoods legislators.

State Representative Rob Swearingen details what the committee did....

"....so there's a couple of caveats to the motion. The city will have to take it to a binding referendum to the voters of Rhinelander to a normal election day, so next November would be the closest. Along with that, they must spend it on infrastructure, roads...."

While the motion passed the Joint Finance Committee, it must be approved by the full legislature, then signed by the Governor. The tax is one-half cent on a dollar sales tax which can only be used to improve infrastructure, in this case roads. Eagle River has had this type of tax for several years.

Also from the city of Rhinelander, the city council Friday morning formally accepted the resignation of  City Administrator Blaine Oborn. The council then named a familiar face to Rhinelander city government, Phil Parkinson, as interim City Administrator. Parkinson was city attorney for more than 30 years before retiring in 2013. Oborn is taking a similar job in Lake Geneva.
