Protect Yourself Against Cyber Scams

flickr.com

October is National Cyber Security Awareness month and the Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection is telling the public how to secure their online information from cyber scams.  DATCP’s Jerad Albracht says tech support and IRS scams are the most popular. He says tech support scammers call claiming your computer is infected, while IRS scammers call demanding for immediate payments and threaten with legal action.

“…cyber awareness is an issue for all of us whether you have just a computer at your desktop or whether you’re a heavy mobile user with a smart phone and a tablet and a laptop. So across the board, we need to reconsider the security around our digital lifestyles and see what we can do to make ourselves more secure.”

Albracht says tech support and IRS scams target victims randomly and regularly, and says the best defense is to know how the scams work.
