Public Comment Sought On DNR Wild Rice Plan

Wisconsin DNR

Wild rice is common across the Northwoods, and the DNR is seeking public comment as the agency begins a strategic analysis for its management.

DNR environmental review coordinator Jon Simonson says the input is being sought...

"....Essentially what this is is a 'think before you act' fact-finding process. Before we draft a more formal wildlife management plan, first we need to lay out all the information and alternatives that will be important for the public and decision makers when it comes to wild rice management...."

They're inviting public input through July 18.

Wild rice is a culturally important plant to Wisconsin's Native American tribes, and Simonson says the DNR is seeking input from the tribes along with a wide range of stakeholders.

The agency's draft list of strategic analysis topics is available by searching theDNR websiteusing for keywords "wild rice" and selecting the link for "wild rice management strategic analysis" in the right side navigation panel. All comments received during the scoping period will be shared on the DNR website.
