Public Input Sought By DNR On Antlerless Quotas

National Park Service

County Deer Advisory Councils will release their preliminary antlerless deer quota, permit level, and season structure recommendations for the 2018 deer hunting season this week.

Antlerless quota recommendations and hunter success rates from previous hunts help determine the number of antlerless tags available for this year's deer hunting season, and help the DNR and councils work to reach deer population objectives within their county.

DNR big game ecologist Kevin Wallenfang says the recommendations are designed to get feedback...

"....we have completed the March CDAC meetings and now we're going to go into a period where we're going to provide a public feedback opportunity. It's going to be online and it will run through April 12. That will give hunters a chance to weigh in on the preliminary recommendations that each one of the county deer councils have made....then they're going to come back the week of April 16th and make their final recommendations...."

Wallenfang says that CDACs are considering a variety of factors like harvest data, population trends, and winter severity when they discuss harvest objectives and tag levels for 2018. Wallenfang says the upcoming meetings are open to the public.
