Report Shows Social Security's Economic Impact In Northwoods

en.wikipedia.org

Vilas county has the highest amount of Social Security spending in Wisconsin given it's population, according to the National Committee to Preserve Social Security and Medicare, based in Washington D.C.

The advocacy group has a report detailing how much money is spent by people on Social Security in a given area. Max Richtman is President of the organization. He says it's been long established the economic impact Social Security makes in communities. But he says their new report shows it has an even larger impact as recipients spend the money they get for daily living expenses...

"....in Wisconsin, for example, we see that 1.15 million people receive benefits resulting in more than $17 billion...."

Richtman says the money paid provides much local economic support...

"....Social Security, yes, it's important for beneficiaries, it's a matter of life and death for some, but it's also vital for communities where these beneficiaries live....."

The total outcome of those benefits totals more than $31 billion as those dollars turn over in the marketplace. In Oneida county, 32 percent of residents receive benefits and that money accounts for 11 percent of earned income of all residents in the county.

Nearly 35,000 residents in Oneida, Vilas, Forest, Lincoln and Langlade counties get Social Security checks.
